Homeland Museum

Ingmarsö hembygdsmuseum

Opening hours summer 2023

During the month of July, open both weekdays and weekends
between 10:00 and 14:00
Take the opportunity to look into the museum and then visit the farm shop opposite. (Sometimes we can open at other times on request).

The story begins in the Viking Age.
At Brottö, archaeologists have found traces from this time, and as early as the 1640s Norrgården was mentioned on one of the maps of the newly established land surveying office. All this and up to today's date, you can see and read about on the Timeline in the museum. Here are the school, the mission house, the dance floor, the strawberry farms, the summer guests and the boarding house.

What will you find in our museum?
In addition to old fine things from a bygone time on our islands, you will find here the stories of the islands and their people – strong, wind-bitten and stubborn people, who fought against storms, Russian ravages, wars and long, black winter nights. Here you will find  stories about the joy and initiative that have become a hallmark of the islands.

The mission house

On Ingmarsö there is a mission house built in 1904 that is taken care of by the Ingmarsö Free Church Congregation. Church services, concerts and other events are organized in the mission house. Just like many other associations on the island, the operation depends on voluntary contributions (Gift to Ingmarsö Mission House, plusgiro 414 03 62-7 Membership fee to Ingmarsö Free Church Congregation, SEK 100 per year)

Cultural landscape

Ingmarsö's agricultural landscape
The lands on Ingmarsö are characterized by hundreds of years of small-scale agriculture. The small, patchy pastures and dykes remain and the beautiful landscape and untouched forest attract many visitors and holidaymakers to the island.
For the past 50 years, the land has been farmed by one and the same farmer. He has gradually wound down his business to retire and has no successor. Most of the land is owned by different owners around the island.
A number of years ago, it was realized that the lands are at risk of quickly growing again and applied for and received grants for clearing and new fences for some lands. Some families have sheep that have grazed and winter fodder has been harvested on the fields.

Ingmarsö Norrgård
Norrgården is owned by Stiftelsen Ingmarsö Norrgård and School, founders are Österåker Municipality and Ingmarsö Byalag. On the farm are the two residential buildings, where Bed & Breakfast, the old farm buildings, two of which house the Ingmarsö Brottö Homeland Museum and the barn. The land consists mostly of forest but also arable land at Norrgården, Bastugärdet and Kvarngärdet.

Ingmarsö Cultural Landscape
Norrgården is an agricultural property and the foundation administers the landscape care, which is called Ingmarsö Cultural Landscape. Additional grants have been received for the purchase of some agricultural machinery and implements. Contributors so far have been Leader, the County Administrative Board's skärgårdsmedel, the Island Fund and Österåker municipality. Voluntary contributions have come from residents on the island.

New stage
In the long term, however, it is not possible to continue this type of activity with voluntary work alone. Animal husbandry has, after all, been at hobby level and has not yielded any surplus. One wish has been to have a new farmer take over the entire operation. One of the landowners on the island has also realized this and has offered to pay for a new residential building which is a prerequisite for a new farming family to take over. Construction has started and the new house is expected to be ready for occupancy in autumn 2021.

Lessee to Norrgården
In the spring of 2021, discussions about leases continue with some interested farmers and we expect to have an agreement ready before the summer. Our hope is that the new lessee will move in at the turn of the year and that their business will start in the spring of 2022. The lease includes Norrgården's arable land, the barn and the residential building. The lessee may then agree with other land owners on the island about land maintenance. According to the agreement, the land must be managed with grazing, agriculture and mowing.
